Transportation Design Services
A Traffic Impact Study is required for almost any development or transportation project. The study outlines future traffic volumes based on growth rates and future development projects. Interwest uses this information, to determine street and intersection improvements that are needed to meet proper levels of services for the public. Traffic impact studies can also determine bicycle and pedestrian needs in an area as well as the vehicular traffic requirements.
On a municipal level, a traffic engineer examines existing and future traffic patterns and optimizes the traffic controls to benefit the majority of the public. Interwest can assist in all facets of traffic related design.
Transportation planning looks at an entire community for its future needs. This includes determining the general location and classification of roads, trails, and transit systems. A Master Street / Transportation Plans are often the end product on a transportation planning project.
Our designers use all available information including topographic and property surveys, master street plans, and traffic impact studies to create construction plans for all types of transportation projects. Local, state and federal standards are utilized to further determine that the project is safe and functional for the public.
Roundabouts are becoming a valuable tool for municipalities and developers in areas where traditional intersections cannot meet adequate levels of service. Roundabouts are an efficient way to keep traffic moving, and in most comparisons, safer than a traditional signalized intersection. Interwest has a variety of options to make roundabout design plans easy to construct and can provide assistance in the “selling” of a roundabout to the public.
Traffic control plans are prepared at the same time as the construction plans to show how temporary devices, such as barrels, cones, barricades will be placed during construction. Proper phasing plans and traffic control plans can shorten the time and cost of the project’s construction while adding to the safety of the workers and the traveling public.
A temporary solution for an intersection with traffic safety issues can be to improve the striping, signage, or install a curbed island. These plans are utilized to minimize traffic conflicts, channelize vehicles into areas where sight distance is improved, and often to simply force drivers to be more alert. Interwest can help develop and implement these plans.
The safest way for a person to cross a street is to keep them out of traffic. In specific locations with high pedestrian use, an underpass or overpass just for pedestrians can greatly increase safety and maintain vehicular traffic flow. Interwest can design these facilities utilizing multiple disciplines including traffic engineering, transportation design, and structural systems.
