Elk Grove Quiet Zones
Elk Grove, CA

The City of Elk Grove secured 24-hour Quiet Zones from the Federal Railroad Administration and became the eighth city in the state of California to secure a quiet zone under the new federal rules. To qualify for the zones, at-grade railroad crossing improvements were implemented at some locations. These quiet zones relieved railroad train engineers from the federal requirement of blowing the horns at every at-grade crossing. Train engineers may still sound their horns as necessary. However, sounding horns will not be required and heard on a regular basis as before. The benefits of a quiet zone include improved quality of life and significant reduction in noise pollution from train horns.
